How do I change the default text editor to vim?
Posted on 19 January 2013 03:45 AM

My hosting package was just upgraded to your new Genesis Class servers. I'm currently connected to my account via the command line, and I've noted that the default editor is no longer vim.

How do I change the default text editor to vi (vim) or other?

To change your default editor, edit your ~/.bashrc file (/big/dom/xDOMAIN/USERNAME/.bashrc) and add a line at the end like this:
export EDITOR=vim

The change will take effect after you re-login.

To see a list of some of the available editors, you can run:
$ grep editors /var/lib/portage/world
(Note, in addition to the editors shown with the above command, pico and mcedit are also available for your use.)
