My email keeps disappearing - unable to unlink all deleted messages?

Question:

I am getting an error in my email client "ERR unable to unlink all deleted messages".

I keep sending myself email, but it's disappearing. I see it in the CNC and then it's gone.

Answer:

In many instances this is caused by multiple machines and/or email clients accessing your POP email account, and one may be checking but leaving email on the server, while one removes the email.

An example:
client1: checks POP, leaves mail on server
client2: checks POP, pulls new and the mail is left on server
client1: checks POP has a setting for 'delete messages after X many days' goes to delete the aged mail and there is none to delete due to client2

This same scenario could be the reason your email is "disappearing" -- you are checking from the machine that leaves email on the server, while the other machine is checking and automatically removing the email from the server before you can get it on the other machine.

Note: These scenarios may be caused by one or more of the following configurations:
a) 2 different people accessing the same POP account
b) 1 person using multiple email clients/programs to access the same POP account (laptop, desktop, yahoo mail, etc)
c) 1 person with 1 email program with 2 personalities checking same box (e.g. Eudora, Netscape Messenger 6, NeoPlanet, etc.)
