winmail.dat attachment on my FutureQuest email?
Posted on 16 January 2004 09:00 AM
Question:

Recently, several people have asked me what the attachment is on my emails that they can't open. This happens when I haven't even sent any attachments! I also cannot see any attachment, however, on the return message, there is a line that says "winmail.dat". Are you able to shed any light on this?

Answer:

winmail.dat is a special proprietary format that Microsoft uses to send formatted text, special features, and other encoded items from one user to another. Therefore, if your email is showing a winmail.dat file being attached, this would be due to using a Microsoft product to send the email (such as Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.) or the email is being sent through a Microsoft Exchange server, not a Unix server as used by FutureQuest.
