Why do I receive email sent to others @mydomain?

I'm the administrator for "mydomain.tld". I keep getting emails from people who are attempting to send them to friends with a "theirname@mydomain.tld" extension. I only have two email accounts set up, yet I receive email addressed to people with all kinds of "theirname@mydomain.tld" addresses. For instance, this morning I received email addressed to "marketing@mydomain.tld". We have no "marketing@mydomain.tld" email account yet I got this email. Why and how do I put a stop to this?


This is a feature called "Catch All" and it's a setting you are able to Enable or Disable within your Email Manager located within your CNC.

Your Catch-All email account is an account that will accept any mail directed to your domain name that is not otherwise specified as a POP3, Alias, or BlackHole email account.

To disable the Catch-All feature, simply visit the Email Manager section of your CNC and click on "[Catch-All Alias]". On the next screen, delete the contents of the text box and click "Save" to disable the Catch-All.

If you disable the "Catch All" then any emails sent to a non-valid email address on your domain will be refused by the FutureQuest mail servers. In refusing the message, the FutureQuest servers will send an error message to the sending mail server and that server will generally return an error message to the sender of the email. Because the FutureQuest servers do not accept email to the non-valid address, no system resources are expended on storing or processing the message. Any "bounce" notifications are generated by the sending mail system.

You can override the system's default behavior by setting up accounts specifically for those addresses, including BlackHole accounts, in your CNC. More on this can be found in the following discussions in the Community Forums:

If you wish to not receive email to one (or more) of these accounts you can simply create a blackhole alias for it in your CNC Email Manager as explained in the threads above.
