Random DNS errors when loading my secure site?
Posted on 14 January 2004 09:40 AM
Question:

The error ONLY occurs on subdomains. We'll go to load a page and it won't load (DNS error). Hitting refresh fixes the error. This problem is RANDOM, and has occurred over a period of days, across 5 ISP's, all the way across New England. It is not a problem with our ISPs, nor is a problem with any gateway up to your server. Again, hitting refresh completely "fixes" the problem. Our links are not bad, nor are the pages.

It seems to be a problem with the SSL encrypted domains. Any ideas?

Answer:

This is an exclusive IE problem that doesn't always make rhyme nor reason...

If you have a problem connecting to your server with MSIE in secure mode (it returns a DNS error in IE5, or 'the server returned an invalid or unrecognized response' in IE4), you need to download the schannel.dll update from Microsoft (see Knowledge Base article Q247367). The reason for this is that the 'Incorp by Reference' certificate throws MS's validation algorithm screwy, and it's caused by an invalid key in the released version of MSIE 5.01.
