 Getting Acquainted With QuestMail
Article

QuestMail, included with every FutureQuest® package with the exception of Externally Redirected (ER) domains, offers FutureQuest® Site Owners easy access to all of their FutureQuest® email accounts from anywhere they have access to the Internet and a web browser. QuestMail is a web-based email client featuring many advanced features including strong MIME support, address books and folder manipulation. Using QuestMail, you can compose, send and receive email with your FutureQuest® hosted email accounts directly from the web! QuestMail is based on the SquirrelMail project, a PHP based webmail client, and works with most any browser, from any type of Internet connection.

Note: FutureQuest® recommends using your own email client for primary email usage and QuestMail for those times when your email client is not readily available to you, such as when you are traveling or unable to access your personal terminal for whatever reason. QuestMail is made available as an added service and is not meant to be used as your primary email client.

Now that you know a little about what QuestMail is, let's get acquainted with using QuestMail!

First, point your browser to http://QuestMail.FutureQuest.net. Clicking on the Secure Login link from that page or visiting https://QuestMail.FutureQuest.net will allow you to send and receive email securely via QuestMail over an SSL encrypted path.

Here you will need to log in using a FutureQuest® account email address and the password for that email account.

Once logged in, you should see the Folders list in the left menu. The default folder is the InBox and you can navigate to the different folders by clicking on them. Any mail within those folders will be listed in the main part of the screen. To read an email, simply click on the subject of the email. If you wish to respond to it, click the "Reply" link in the upper right corner of the screen. (You can also forward or reply to all the recipients of the email by clicking on the "Forward" or "Reply All" links, respectively.) After clicking Reply, simply type your response and hit one of the "Send" buttons (there are a couple of "Send" buttons just for convenience--both of them will result in the same action of sending your reply).

Now to briefly cover the selections in QuestMail and what they do:

Compose: This is used to begin a new email to send to someone. (Note there is a limit of 15 recipients per email when using QuestMail.)

Addresses: This is a link to your email address book. Your address book can be used to keep track of email addresses to which you send email.

Folders: Using this option, you can create new folders to sort your email. You can view the contents of any folder by clicking on that folder's name within the Folders list on the left side of the screen.

Options: This contains the tools to allow you to change your personal information, set preferences, and optional settings which are covered in more detail below.

  • Personal Information: This is where you are able to specify personal information for use in creating an identity such as your name, your "From:" and "Reply To:" email addresses, signature, timezone, etc. (You can also configure multiple identities to use with QuestMail through the Edit Advanced Identities link under Personal Information.)

  • Display Preferences: With this option, you can affect the appearance of the QuestMail display, by changing settings such as the colors, the language and other types of formatting.

  • Message Highlighting: With Message Highlighting, based upon given criteria, incoming messages can have different background colors in the message list. This helps to easily distinguish who the messages are from, especially helpful for mailing lists.

  • Folder Preferences: These settings change the way your folders are displayed and manipulated.

  • Index Order: This section gives you control over the message list. You can choose which information you want in the message list, and the order in which it is displayed.

  • SpamCop-Spam Reporting: Help fight the battle against unsolicited email. SpamCop is a free service that greatly assists in finding the true source of the spam and helps in letting the proper people know about the abuse.

  • Translation Options: Allows you to choose from different translators to be used when you get messages in a different language.
Hint: Be sure to hit "Submit" after you have set your preferences or the desired changes will not take effect.

Search: This allows you to search for keywords located in emails.

Help: Always a nice tool to have when dealing with something new. By default, Help will provide information regarding the last screen visited or option used. To view a listing of the subjects available within the Help section, click "Table of Contents". The Help section available through QuestMail provides a more in-depth explanation of the features and settings than this outline and is highly recommended for additional information.

Toggle All: This will Select or Deselect messages. Especially helpful when wanting to select all messages to move to a specific folder; Trash for example.

IMPORTANT USAGE NOTES REGARDING QUESTMAIL

* When you check your mail with QuestMail, it will remain on the server. This means that you still may use your primary email client to retrieve your email, even after having read it with QuestMail, though it will be marked as "read" meaning you may need to use your CNC to mark it as "new" again, depending on how your particular email client handles email.

* If you DELETE your email from QuestMail, it will be deleted from the server and, in this case, the deleted mail will NOT be available for retrieval from your primary email client. Messages moved to the Trash folder will automatically be deleted from the server after 7 days and cannot be retrieved once deleted. If your intention is to store messages in IMAP/QuestMail Do Not place them in the trash folder.

* If you download your email using your primary email client and do NOT have the client set to “leave mail on server” it will NOT be available in QuestMail as it will be deleted from the server once you have downloaded it. (“Not Leaving Mail on Server” is the recommended setting for POP email clients such as Eudora, Outlook, etc.)

* QuestMail is an IMAP-based web mail system. This means all of the email displayed within the QuestMail interface is still on the server. Because the email is still on the server, it is also counted against your disk space usage, as it always has been, until you remove (delete) it from the server.

To summarize, once you delete the mail from the server it is gone and cannot be restored from server backups. You may delete the email using QuestMail or other email clients/readers of your choice. If you delete the mail then it will not be available, as it no longer exists. It’s important to keep this fact in mind when working with multiple email clients/readers. Messages moved to the Trash Folder will automatically be deleted from the server after 7 days and cannot be retrieved once deleted.
